Roman Shield Reconstruction

Reconstruction of a Roman shield, based on the finds from Dura-Europos, Syria. The so-called Amazon Shield is one of the very few painted shields of Roman origin that were found. It measures 117cm x 97cm and the wood planks (poplar) are 7mm thick at the centre, thinning down to 3mm at the edges.

Many of the elements that make up the decorations in the middle of the Amazon Shield can also be found on two other Dura shields.
The fighting figures depict the battle between the Greeks and Amazons, the Amazonomachy.

A shield such like that would be faced with a layer of textil and a rawhide layer on top, on both sides. A rim made of rawhide stripes would be stitched around the edges. The shield boss could be of iron or copper. Wooden and iron handle bar constructions are both possible. Also a suspension loop could be attached to the back.
